Kinship Counseling

Integrative  ð–¦¹  Somatic  ð–¦¹  Relational  ð–¦¹  Ecological

Tending connection with ourselves, each other, and the living world.

You may be here because things feel challenging, overwhelming, or uncertain. You're likely a sensitive human, navigating complex dynamics.

Maybe you're longing for a deeper sense of connection, with yourself, others, or the world around you. You may be in the midst of big transitions, grieving, healing from childhood trauma and attachment wounds, seeking to build strong and secure relationships, or seeking deeper self-knowing and expression of your authentic self.

You don't have to carry it alone. Therapy is a place to slow down and to be with what is, together.

Meet Emily

Emily McKinley, MSW, LICSWA (she/they)

Emily McKinley, MSW, LICSWA

I'm a licensed clinical social worker, death doula, and lifelong student of the natural world, offering somatic and ecological therapy rooted in relationship, with yourself, with others, and with the earth.

My approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded in the belief that you already hold the wisdom you need. My role is to help you come home to it.

Modalities

Somatic Experiencing Internal Family Systems Mindfulness Acceptance & Commitment Therapy Emotion Focused Therapy Dialectical Behavior Therapy Humanistic & Transpersonal Art & Ecopsychology

While these tools can be helpful, I believe in you and your ability to heal, in your inner strength and your intuitive wisdom.

Lens

Queer, decolonial, anti-racist, and rooted in social and environmental justice. My approach is relational, heart-centered, and rooted in the belief that we are already whole, and that sometimes all we need to do is come home to the ecology of kinship — the interdependence that is our true nature. It's here where we can be deeply witnessed, fully express ourselves, and experience true belonging.

The Approach

Somatic & nature-based therapy

I help people develop a more attuned awareness of their felt sense, bodies, minds, hearts, and spirits, and our earth, toward a more integrated Self.

Somatic Experiencing

Working with the body, not just the story

Somatic Experiencing is a body-based approach to healing stress and trauma. Rather than only talking about what happened, we track sensation, impulse, and nervous system response as they arise, slowly, at a pace your body can integrate. Over time, this helps release stored survival energy, restore a felt sense of safety, and build capacity to be with difficult experience without becoming overwhelmed by it.

Eco / Nature-Based Therapy

Healing in relationship with the living world

Our nervous systems evolved in relationship with the natural world, and that relationship can be a profound resource for regulation, grief, and growth. Sessions may include time outdoors, attention to seasonal and life cycles, and practices that reconnect you to instinct, rhythm, and a sense of belonging beyond the human world alone.

Death Doula & Grief Support

Companioning life's biggest portal

Have you or someone you loved received a life-altering diagnosis? Perhaps you're exploring hospice, or are already receiving palliative care.

A death doula can assist with end-of-life planning (even well before you need it!), navigating resources, care coordination, vigils, practical support, grief counseling, rituals, memorials, and green burials.

I provide in-home support locally, and telehealth and phone support globally, for those experiencing death and navigating this biggest life portal, including individuals, families, communities, and kinships of all kinds. I also provide death doula services for our animal kin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you take insurance?

No. I'm a private pay provider. This allows more flexibility and confidentiality in how we work together, without a diagnosis or treatment plan being required by a third party. I'm happy to provide a superbill on request, which you can submit to your insurance for possible out-of-network reimbursement, though reimbursement isn't guaranteed.

What are your rates?

Sessions are $150 per 50-minute hour. I offer multiple sliding scale spots for those for whom the full fee is a barrier. Feel free to ask when you reach out.

What is a Good Faith Estimate?

Under the No Surprises Act, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges for therapy services if you're not using insurance. This estimate outlines the anticipated cost of services based on what we discuss during scheduling. I'll provide this in writing before we begin working together, and you can request an updated estimate at any time.

What's the difference between somatic therapy and talk therapy?

Talk therapy tends to focus primarily on thoughts and narrative. Somatic therapy includes that, but also brings attention to the body (sensation, breath, posture, impulse) as a source of information and a pathway for processing and releasing stress and trauma that talking alone doesn't always reach.

Do you offer virtual and in-person sessions?

Both. I offer virtual sessions across Washington State, and in-person outdoor sessions in western Whatcom County for those local to the area.

How do I get started?

Reach out through the contact form below or by email. We'll set up a brief consultation to talk about what brings you to therapy, answer any questions, and see if we feel like a good fit before scheduling a first full session.

Do you offer death doula support separately from therapy?

Yes. Death doula support is offered as its own service, independent of clinical therapy, and can include practical, emotional, or ceremonial support around end-of-life planning, hospice navigation, vigils, and grief. Learn more here.

What if I'm in a mental health crisis right now?

If you're experiencing a mental health emergency or are in crisis, please call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), or go to your nearest emergency room. This website and its contact form are not monitored in real time and are not appropriate for urgent or emergency situations.
